Reportage Wedding Photography – Why No Flash?

Douglas has taken the unusual step of not using flash when shooting weddings. The best wedding photographs are achieved by not using flash particularly as a reportage photographer for the following reasons :-

1. Retaining atmosphere

Flash reduces the colour of the subject and darkens the background, resulting in unattractive photographs. Capturing an image without flash preserves all of the background atmosphere and light.

2. Less intrusive

It is FAR less intrusive to take a photograph without flash, than to blast away with eyebrow searing flash at every opportunity. The couple and guests can enjoy their day without distraction, especially important during the ceremony.  It allows Douglas as a professional photographer to remain discreet and almost invisible at all times, see the blog for client testimonials.

3. Capturing the moment

The ideal photograph can be captured over several frames as the subject is unaware of the wedding photographer's presence, but if flash is used, the camera shy subject just turns quickly away, and the moment is lost with the guest left feeling uncomfortable.

4. 'Newsflash' – New Professional Canon Cameras

We are one of the first studios in the UK to receive two of the new flagship professional cameras from Canon, the 1D MKIV, which offer MUCH higher resolution, colour fidelity and exposure accuracy over previous models. When coupled with the very fast prime lenses, Douglas can shoot comfortably in the darkest church or reception venue in the depths of winter without compromising the images in any way. In fact the resulting photographs, taken in such low light are nothing short of incredible. The cameras can also shoot HD video, which adds a new dimension to wedding coverage. For the first time, our wedding videographer can shoot with the same fast lenses which gives the video a beautiful cinematic look, unachievable with standard video cameras.
